Students will use each of the five phonemes on their card to build a high-frequency word. You may wish to encourage students to refer to your classroom high-frequency word wall.
This activity can be used as an extension for students working on the versions of the same game using 3 or 4 phonemes.
Use knowledge of letters and sounds to spell words
Read and write some high-frequency words and other familiar words
Understand how to use knowledge of letters and sounds including onset and rime to spell words
Know how to read and write some high-frequency words and other familiar words
Demonstrates developing skills in using letters, simple sound blends and some sight words to represent known words when spelling

Uses single-letter grapheme–phoneme correspondences and common digraphs to decode and encode words when reading and creating texts
Understands and effectively uses Tier 1 words and Tier 2 words in familiar contexts
Reads decodable texts aloud with automaticity
Highlight the first phoneme of the word on each card.
You could also highlight the second and/or last phoneme a different colour.
Students can begin to build their own 5-phoneme words or create their own 5-phoneme cards to be completed by classmates.
