In the 'Far Out, Flamingos!' elapsed time challenge, students will determine the elapsed time between a given start time and end time. There are multiple levels in this activity and extensions included. This is a good assessment activity for understanding of elapsed time.
Solve problems involving the duration of time including situations involving “am” and “pm” and conversions between units of time
Recognise and use the relationship between formal units of time including days, hours, minutes and seconds to estimate and compare the duration of events
Interpret and use timetables and itineraries to plan activities and determine the duration of events and journeys
Use ‘am’ and ‘pm’ notation and solve simple time problems
measure, calculate and compare elapsed time; interpret and use timetables and itineraries to plan activities and determine the duration of events and journeys
Convert between units of time
Measure, calculate and compare elapsed time
Use am and pm notation and solve simple time problems
Uses appropriate terminology to describe, and symbols to represent, mathematical ideas
Selects and uses appropriate mental or written strategies, or technology, to solve problems
Reads and records time in one-minute intervals and converts between hours, minutes and seconds
Estimates, measures and compares the masses of objects using kilograms and grams
