This unit covers the Earth and Space Sciences strand of the Australian Curriculum for Year 1. In this unit, students will learn about weather changes in the environment and how they affect living things. They will learn that these weather changes occur in predictable patterns that we call the seasons.
Each of the lessons has an accompanying worksheet for students to complete and the unit culminates with a final assessment when students can demonstrate their understanding of how the weather and seasons affect living things.

Overview

The key concepts in this unit include:

  • Many changes in the environment are the result of weather.
  • These changes can be observed through the 5 senses.
  • While weather can be unpredictable, it follows a larger pattern that we call the 4 seasons.
  • Plants and animals have ways of coping with the seasonal changes in their environment, including migration, hibernation or changes in appearance.
  • We change what we do and what we wear to suit the weather and season.
  • We are fortunate to be able to predict the weather ahead of time.
