Class Budget Challenge Maths Lesson for Years 3 to 6
Class Budget Challenge is a financial maths lesson for Years 3 to 6 from Teach This, aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Students plan an end of year celebration for six people on a $60 budget, choosing party essentials, food and drink from a priced Party Shop. The 9-slide PowerPoint explains what a budget is, models a worked example, then sets the challenge with a choose, calculate, add and check routine. Differentiated challenge cards include Bigger Party, Best Buy, Budget Cut and Whole-Class Party, and Plot Twist cards add extra guests, a budget cut, a sold-out item or a bonus $15.
Groups finish by presenting their plan to the class for a vote. It suits an end of term maths lesson, group work or a relief day, and it saves planning time with real-world problem solving ready to go.
