Creating 2D Shapes - Presentation
An engaging lower primary presentation exploring how familiar two-dimensional shapes can be combined and partitioned to create new shapes. Visual examples and interactive questions support students to recognise common shapes, predict composite shapes and identify the individual shapes used to construct more complex forms.
Learning goals
- We are learning to combine and split composite shapes to identify the common shapes and objects.
- We are learning to combine and split composite shapes to identify the common two-dimensional shapes.
- We are learning to recognise, compare and classify shapes and objects using obvious features and spatial terms, e.g. opposite, parallel, curved, straight.
Curriculum alignment
Australian Curriculum covers QLD / SA / WA / NT / TAS / ACT.
Differentiation
Modifications
Use physical shape manipulatives alongside the presentation, review shape names before combining shapes, model each example using cut-out shapes, provide fewer shape choices, allow students to physically manipulate shapes before answering, use partner discussion, provide shape reference cards.
Extensions
Create new shapes by combining familiar shapes, find multiple ways to partition the same shape, draw composite shapes for classmates to decompose, explain reasoning using mathematical vocabulary, investigate whether different shapes can create the same composite shape, construct designs using cut-out shapes.
