This is a quick and easy rotations game, where students roll up to 10 dice and lay them out on their card to create decimal addition and subtraction problems to solve on their own, or to exchange with a partner. Laminate and keep these cards or print them while you are running late for class, either way your students are going to enjoy trying to stump each other with the questions they create.
The game is a part of a larger unit that was written to help your Year 6 students add and subtract decimals and develop estimates through rounding to check their answers.
Apply knowledge of place value to add and subtract decimals, using digital tools where appropriate; use estimation and rounding to check the reasonableness of answers
Approximate numerical solutions to problems involving rational numbers and percentages, including financial contexts, using appropriate estimation strategies
Add and subtract decimals, with and without digital technologies, and use estimation and rounding to check the reasonableness of answers
Add and subtract decimals, with and without digital technologies, and use estimation and rounding to check the reasonableness of answers
Investigate and calculate percentage discounts of 10%, 25% and 50% on sale items, with and without digital technologies
Describes and represents mathematical situations in a variety of ways using mathematical terminology and some conventions
Selects and applies appropriate problem- solving strategies, including the use of digital technologies, in undertaking investigations
Gives a valid reason for supporting one possible solution over another
Compares, orders and calculates with fractions, decimals and percentages
Applies an understanding of place value and the role of zero to represent the properties of numbers
Compares and orders decimals up to 3 decimal places
Determines percentages of quantities, and finds equivalent fractions and decimals for benchmark percentage values
Selects and applies appropriate strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems
Selects and applies appropriate strategies to solve multiplication and division problems
Constructs and completes number sentences involving multiplicative relations, applying the order of operations to calculations
Compares and orders fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10
Determines 1/2, 1/4, 1/5 and 1/10 of measures and quantities
In addition to rolling the dice, students can flip a coin to decide if they are making an addition or subtraction question.
