Equal Values Odd One Out - Whiteboard Game
Equal Values Odd One Out is a free interactive whiteboard game from Teach This for Year 5 and Year 6 that practises equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages, aligned to the Australian Curriculum. The 20-slide game has eight rounds. In each round, three values show the same amount written in different ways and one is an imposter, such as 0.05 hiding among 1/2, 0.5 and 50%. Students tap the imposter and explain how they know, and the teacher notes give a script and answer explanation for every round.
Teachers open the file on the interactive whiteboard and play straight away, with no setup. The game takes 8 to 10 minutes, so it works as a warm-up or a team battle to finish a fractions lesson.
Learning goals
- We are learning to recognise that 100% represents a whole and use percentages to describe, represent and compare relative percentages visually, e.g. shading a hundreds grid and connect percentages to their decimal and fraction equivalents.
- We are learning to compare, order and represent common fractions including halves, thirds and quarters on the same number line and justify their order.
- We are learning to make connections between equivalent fractions, decimals and percentages.
- We are learning to compare fractions with related denominators and locate and represent them on a number line.
Curriculum alignment
Australian Curriculum covers QLD / SA / WA / NT / TAS / ACT.

Modifications
Give students a fraction, decimal and percentage conversion chart to use during the game, and let them discuss each round with a partner before tapping.
Extensions
Ask students to create their own odd one out set of four values, with three equivalent values and one close imposter, for the class to solve.
