Fractions, Decimals and Percentages Game for Years 5 and 6: Odd One Out
This fractions, decimals and percentages game for Year 5 and Year 6 is Equal Values, an Odd One Out interactive whiteboard game by Teach This aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Students connect familiar percentages to their decimal and fraction equivalents and recognise equivalent fractions. The game has 8 rounds, and each round shows four values where three are the same amount and one is the imposter. Rounds include 1/2, 0.5, 50% and 0.05, and 3/5, 6/10, 60% and 0.35. A correct tap opens an explanation slide, and a wrong tap shows a gentle prompt to try again.
It opens in Microsoft PowerPoint on any interactive whiteboard, panel or projector, with no macros, no student logins and no student data collected. A game takes 8 to 10 minutes, which suits a warm-up during a percentages unit. The notes ask students to name another way to write each amount, which builds talk about equivalence.
Learning goals
- We are learning to recognise that 100% represents a whole and use percentages to describe, represent and compare relative percentages visually, e.g. shading a hundreds grid and connect percentages to their decimal and fraction equivalents.
- We are learning to find equivalent representations of fractions and make connections between fractions and decimals, e.g. ยผ of 1 metre = .25m or 25cm.
Curriculum alignment
Australian Curriculum covers QLD / SA / WA / NT / TAS / ACT.
Differentiation
Modifications
Provide a fraction, decimal and percentage equivalence chart for students to check each value. Start with the rounds using halves, quarters and tenths before moving to fifths.
Extensions
Ask students to write the imposter in two other forms, such as 0.05 as 5% and 5/100. Students can design their own odd one out set using thirds or eighths for a partner to solve.
