Homophones Whiteboard Game for Years 4 to 6: Glow Go

Homophones Whiteboard Game for Years 4 to 6: Glow Go

This homophones game for Year 4 to Year 6 is Glow Go, an interactive whiteboard racing game by Teach This aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Students read and write homophones and use sentence context to choose the correct spelling. The game has 15 fill-the-gap sentences covering pairs such as its and it's, there, their and they're, and right and write. Four teams pick a neon racer and move one step along the track for every correct answer. Teams write A, B, C or D on a mini whiteboard, then tap their answer on the board. The notes explain both words in every pair.

It opens in Microsoft PowerPoint on any interactive whiteboard, panel or projector, with no macros, no student logins and no student data collected. A race takes 15 to 20 minutes, which suits a spelling lesson after students have been mixing up there, their and they're in their writing.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to read and write a large core of high frequency words and use context to make correct spelling choices, e.g. homophones – know, no.

Differentiation

Modifications

Give students a homophone reference card with a picture clue for each pair before the race. Read each sentence aloud twice and let teams point to the answer instead of writing it.

Extensions

Ask each team to write a sentence that uses both words in a homophone pair correctly, such as 'They're putting their bags over there.' Students can create a class homophone wall with a picture clue for each pair in the game.
