Measurement Charts
A colourful set of classroom reference charts introducing key measurement concepts and vocabulary. Covers length, mass, capacity, time, temperature, area, perimeter and volume, with clear definitions, common units and useful unit relationships to support students during measurement learning.
Learning goals
- We are learning to use scaled instruments to measure length, mass, capacity, duration and temperature.
- We are learning to compare the perimeter and area of shapes, counting appropriate formal and informal units.
- We are learning to use βamβ and βpmβ notation and solve simple time problems including duration and converting between units of time e.g. 60 mins = 1 hour.
- We are learning to choose appropriate units of measurement for length, mass and capacity of objects, e.g. kilometres to measure the distance between two towns.
- We are learning to convert between common units of measurement for length, mass and capacity and use decimal representations of metric measurements relevant to the context of a problem, e.g. 1.25m = 125cm.
- We are learning to solve practical problems involving the perimeter and area of regular and irregular shapes using appropriate metric units.
- We are learning to use the formula for the area of a rectangle and use it to solve practical problems.
Curriculum alignment
Australian Curriculum covers QLD / SA / WA / NT / TAS / ACT.
Differentiation
Modifications
Display individual charts as concepts are introduced, provide printed copies for student reference, focus on relevant units for targeted lessons, pair charts with concrete measuring tools and practical activities.
Extensions
Students select appropriate units for real-world measurements, compare and convert familiar units, estimate and measure classroom objects, explain the difference between related measurement concepts.
