Number Patterns Game for Years 1 and 2: Fix the Pattern

Number Patterns Game for Years 1 and 2: Fix the Pattern

Fix the Pattern is a number patterns game for Years 1 and 2 by Teach This, an interactive whiteboard game aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Students continue skip counting patterns by twos, fives and tens and recall addition and subtraction facts to 20. There are 8 rounds, and each round shows a row of tiles with one wrong tile to find and fix. Rounds include counting back, doubles and the equals sign. A correct tap shows the fixed answer, and a wrong tap shows a Try again slide. A game takes about 8 minutes. It opens in Microsoft PowerPoint on any interactive whiteboard, panel or projector, with no macros, no student logins and no student data collected.

Use it as a maths warm-up, or as a two-team battle with one point for finding the mistake and a bonus point for explaining the fix. The teacher notes explain each fix in words students can repeat.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to recognise, continue and create pattern sequences, with numbers, symbols, shapes and objects, formed by skip counting, initially by twos, fives and tens.
  • We are learning to add and subtract numbers within 20, using a variety of strategies, e.g. counting on, counting back, partitioning, subitising and part-part whole knowledge of numbers to 10 and to use the language of 'plus' and 'minus' in story problems.
  • We are learning to recognise, describe and create patterns with numbers, shapes and objects and identify the missing term patterns.
  • We are learning to recall addition facts to 20 and apply to related subtraction facts using a range of strategies.
  • We are learning to use a range of strategies, to solve simple addition and subtraction problems.
  • We are learning to continue simple patterns using numbers and objects.
  • We are learning to investigate number patterns adding two, five or ten, identify missing elements and represent patterns on a number line.
  • We are learning to use a range of mental and written strategies to solve simple addition and subtraction problems.
  • We are learning to explore number sequences by twos, threes, fives and tens from any starting point.
  • We are learning to use a range of mental strategies to solve simple addition and subtraction problems.

Curriculum alignment

Australian Curriculum covers QLD / SA / WA / NT / TAS / ACT.

Differentiation

Modifications

Give students a hundred chart or counters to check each pattern before they tap. Read each row aloud together slowly.

Extensions

Ask students to make their own pattern or number sentence with one hidden mistake for a partner to find and fix.
