Number Recognition Memory Game for Foundation: Dice Match
Dice Match is a Foundation number recognition memory game by Teach This, an interactive whiteboard game aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Students subitise dice patterns and match them to the numerals 1 to 6, practising how to name and represent small numbers. The board has 12 numbered cards hiding six pairs, and each pair is a dice face and its matching numeral. Matched pairs stay face up, and unmatched cards are tapped to turn back over. A game takes 10 to 15 minutes. It opens in Microsoft PowerPoint on any interactive whiteboard, panel or projector, with no macros, no student logins and no student data collected.
Play it as a two-team game straight after students have worked with real dice, with one player from each team flipping two cards per turn. It also works at a Foundation maths rotation or on a relief day, because the teacher notes list every card position and pair, so nothing needs to be printed or prepared.
Learning goals
- We are learning to read, write and order numbers to 20 using concrete materials, connecting quantities, numerals and number names.
- We are learning to recognise and name the number of objects in a collection up to 5 using subitising.
- We are learning to count forwards and backwards up to 20.
- We are learning to compare and order numbers to 20 using words such as โmoreโ, โlessโ, โsameโ or โfirstโ, โsecondโ, โthirdโ.
- We are learning to subitise small collections of objects.
Curriculum alignment
Australian Curriculum covers QLD / SA / WA / NT / TAS / ACT.
Differentiation
Modifications
Count the dots on each dice face aloud together before students look for the matching numeral. Play with partners rather than teams so each child has more turns at the board.
Extensions
Ask students to show the matching number of fingers and say one more and one less than the number before they keep a pair.
