Number Words Memory Game for Foundation and Year 1: Number Word Match

Number Words Memory Game for Foundation and Year 1: Number Word Match

Number Word Match is a number words memory game for Foundation and Year 1 by Teach This, an interactive whiteboard game aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Students recognise and represent numbers by matching dice patterns to the number words one to six. The board holds 12 face-down cards that hide six pairs, and each pair is a dice face and its written number word. Matched pairs stay face up, unmatched cards are tapped to turn back over, and a Finish button leads to a celebration slide. A game takes 10 to 15 minutes. It opens in Microsoft PowerPoint on any interactive whiteboard, panel or projector, with no macros, no student logins and no student data collected.

Split the class into two teams that take turns sending a player to the board, and the game becomes a full maths warm-up. The teacher notes list every card position and pair, so it also suits a maths rotation or a relief day without any setting up.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to read, write and order numbers to 20 using concrete materials, connecting quantities, numerals and number names.
  • We are learning to read, write, name and order two-digit numbers to at least 120 using concrete materials, hundred charts and number lines.
  • We are learning to count forwards and backwards up to 20.
  • We are learning to compare and order numbers to 20 using words such as โ€˜moreโ€™, โ€˜lessโ€™, โ€˜sameโ€™ or โ€˜firstโ€™, โ€˜secondโ€™, โ€˜thirdโ€™.
  • We are learning to read, write, model and represent numbers to 100 in different ways and on number lines.

Curriculum alignment

Australian Curriculum covers QLD / SA / WA / NT / TAS / ACT.

Differentiation

Modifications

Turn all the cards face up first so students can find the pairs without relying on memory. Let a student play with a partner who counts the dots aloud with them before they read the word.

Extensions

Ask the student who makes a match to write the numeral and number word on a mini whiteboard and say one more and one less. Challenge students to show the matched number with fingers or counters before the next turn.
