This short unit is based on the Year 5 Australian National Curriculum for science. It is designed to build on students' prior knowledge of the geology to understand how the Earth’s surface changes over time, both slowly or quickly through weathering and erosions, and how we influence those changes.
Students get hands-on experience of how natural forces shape the landscape with a series of exciting in-class activities
Each of the lessons has an accompanying worksheet for students to complete and a final quiz which can be used as a summative assessment task.

Australian Curriculum - (QLD/SA/WA/NT/TAS/ACT)

AC9S5I05

Compare methods and findings with those of others, recognise possible sources of error, pose questions for further investigation and select evidence to draw reasoned conclusions

AC9S5H02

Investigate how scientific knowledge is used by individuals and communities to identify problems, consider responses and make decisions

AC9S5I04

Construct and use appropriate representations, including tables, graphs and visual or physical models, to organise and process data and information and describe patterns, trends and relationships

AC9S5I02

Plan and conduct repeatable investigations to answer questions, including, as appropriate, deciding the variables to be changed, measured and controlled in fair tests; describing potential risks; planning for the safe use of equipment and materials; and identifying required permissions to conduct investigations on Country/Place

AC9S5U02

Describe how weathering, erosion, transportation and deposition cause slow or rapid change to Earth’s surface

AC9S5I06

Write and create texts to communicate ideas and findings for specific purposes and audiences, including selection of language features, using digital tools as appropriate

AC9S5I01

Pose investigable questions to identify patterns and test relationships and make reasoned predictions

Overview

The key concepts in this unit include:

  • The surface of the Earth is constantly changing.
  • These changes can occur over millennia through weathering and erosion, or overnight through natural disasters.
  • Natural disasters have an unparalleled force to change the Earth, and impact the people on it.
  • We are also responsible for changes to the Earth’s surface, sometimes intentionally, sometimes as an intended consequence.
  • We need to become more aware of the impact we are having on erosion and surface change.
Learning Intention
  • We are learning to describe how weathering, erosion, transportation and deposition cause slow or rapid changes to the Earth’s surface.
