Rhyming Words Game for Foundation: Rhyme Time Odd One Out
Rhyme Time is a rhyming words game for Foundation by Teach This, an interactive whiteboard game aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Students build phonological awareness by recognising rhyming words. There are 8 rounds, and each round shows four CVC words, such as cat, hat, dog and mat. Three words rhyme and one does not, and students tap the odd one out. A wrong tap shows a Try again slide that returns to the same question. A game takes 6 to 8 minutes. It opens in Microsoft PowerPoint on any interactive whiteboard, panel or projector, with no macros, no student logins and no student data collected.
Play it as a warm-up before a phonics lesson on word families, or split the class into two teams with one point for a correct first tap. The teacher notes give the words and rhyming ending for each round.
Learning goals
- We are learning to listen for rhyme, letter patterns, syllables and sounds (phonemes) in spoken words (phonological awareness).
- We are learning to listen for rhyme, letter patterns, syllables and sounds in words.
Curriculum alignment

Differentiation
Modifications
Read the four words slowly and stretch the endings, then let students say the words with you before they choose. Play with a small group so each child gets a turn at the board.
Extensions
Ask students to say a new word that rhymes with the three rhyming words, and to make up a rhyming word for the odd one out.
