Sight Words Whiteboard Game for Years 1 and 2: Speed Read
Speed Read is a sight words game for Year 1 and Year 2 by Teach This, an interactive whiteboard game aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Students practise reading and writing high-frequency words with tricky spellings. The game flashes 15 words: said, they, have, where, come, some, were, what, there, could, because, would, friend, school and people. Each word stays on screen for 4 seconds, then the answer slide appears by itself with the word used in a short sentence. A game takes 6 to 8 minutes. It opens in Microsoft PowerPoint on any interactive whiteboard, panel or projector, with no macros, no student logins and no student data collected.
Run it as a quick reading warm-up before guided reading groups, or as a two-team battle at the end of a literacy block with teams alternating flashes. Each answer slide's notes give a sentence to read together and a question to ask, so a relief teacher can lead it with no preparation.
Learning goals
- We are learning to read and write high frequency words.
- We are learning how to read and write high frequency words and use morphemic knowledge of letter patterns and morphemes to spell unfamiliar words.
- We are learning to use visual memory to read and accurately spell high frequency words.
Curriculum alignment
Australian Curriculum covers QLD / SA / WA / NT / TAS / ACT.
Differentiation
Modifications
Run the game with a small group and read each word together on the answer slide before moving on. Pause on the answer slide so students can trace the word in the air.
Extensions
Ask students to write each word from memory on a mini whiteboard before the answer slide appears, then write their own sentence that uses two of the words.
