Tens and Ones Place Value Tool: MAB Builder (Foundation to Year 2)
MAB Builder: Tens and Ones is a place value tool for Foundation to Year 2 by Teach This, an interactive PowerPoint tool aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Students represent and partition two-digit numbers into tens and ones using virtual MAB blocks. Each tap on the Tens or Ones button adds one block, and the number at the top and the value under each column update straight away. There are three modes: Build a number, Guess my number and Make my number. Make my number gives 10 numbers to build, such as 14, 40 and 96, with a yellow cover that reveals each answer. It opens in Microsoft PowerPoint on any interactive whiteboard, panel or projector, with no macros, no student logins and no student data collected.
Model a number during explicit teaching, then switch to Guess my number while students write the hidden number on mini whiteboards. It saves sorting tubs of physical MAB for a whole-class demonstration.
Learning goals
- We are learning to read, write and order numbers to 20 using concrete materials, connecting quantities, numerals and number names.
- We are learning to read, write, name and order two-digit numbers to at least 120 using concrete materials, hundred charts and number lines.
- We are learning to show that one- and two-digit numbers can be partitioned in different ways, such as partitioning two-digit numbers into tens and ones.
- We are learning to show that two- and three-digit numbers can be partitioned and re-named in different ways, such as partitioning three-digit numbers into hundreds, tens and ones.
- We are learning to count forwards and backwards up to 20.
- We are learning to compare and order numbers to 20 using words such as ‘more’, ‘less’, ‘same’ or ‘first’, ‘second’, ‘third’.
- We are learning to read, write, model and represent numbers to 100 in different ways and on number lines.
- We are learning to count collections to 100 using place value groupings.
- We are learning to count collections to 1000 using place value groupings.

Differentiation
Modifications
Start with Build a number and teen numbers only, and have students count the ones blocks aloud before adding a ten. Pair the tool with real MAB blocks on desks so students can copy each build.
Extensions
Ask students to build a number, then say what it would become with one more ten or one less ten before tapping the blocks to check.
