Skip Counting Number Line Tool: Skip Counting Hops (Foundation to Year 3)

This skip counting number line for Foundation to Year 3 is Skip Counting Hops, an interactive PowerPoint tool by Teach This aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Students continue number sequences formed by skip counting by twos, fives and tens, then by threes and fours. A menu offers five patterns: count by 2s to 20, by 3s to 30, by 4s to 40, by 5s to 50 and by 10s to 100. Each tap of the Hop button makes Joey the kangaroo jump along the line. The new number appears on the line and in a counting row at the top. After ten hops a banner confirms how far the class has counted.

It opens in Microsoft PowerPoint on any interactive whiteboard, panel or projector, with no macros, no student logins and no student data collected. Use it as a two-minute counting routine at the start of maths, with the class saying the next number before each tap.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to recognise, continue and create pattern sequences, with numbers, symbols, shapes and objects, formed by skip counting, initially by twos, fives and tens.
  • We are learning to recognise, describe and create patterns with numbers, shapes and objects and identify the missing term patterns.
  • We are learning to recall multiplication facts for 3, 4, 5 and 10 and apply this to related division facts.
  • We are learning to continue simple patterns using numbers and objects.
  • We are learning to investigate number patterns adding two, five or ten, identify missing elements and represent patterns on a number line.
  • We are learning to recall multiplication facts of two, three, five and ten and related division facts.

Curriculum alignment

Australian Curriculum covers QLD / SA / WA / NT / TAS / ACT.

Differentiation

Modifications

Start with counting by 10s and 5s, which are the easiest patterns to hear and see, before moving to 2s, 3s and 4s. Give students a hundreds chart to colour the numbers as Joey lands on them.

Extensions

Ask students to count backwards from the end of the line, such as 40, 36, 32, and to explain the pattern. Students can find numbers that appear in two counting rows, such as 12 in both the 3s and 4s patterns.
