Virtual Dice Roller Whiteboard Tool: Monster Dice (Years 3 to 6)
Monster Dice is a virtual dice roller for Years 3 to 6 by Teach This, an interactive PowerPoint tool that rolls two dice on the classroom whiteboard. A tap on the board stops the dice, or they land by themselves after about 10 seconds. The result slide shows both numbers with the sum, difference and product, for example 2 + 6 = 8, 6 - 2 = 4 and 2 x 6 = 12. All 36 possible rolls are built in. It opens in Microsoft PowerPoint on any interactive whiteboard, panel or projector, but the How to use slide notes that it does not play in Google Slides. It has no macros, no student logins and no student data collected.
Roll at the start of a maths lesson and have students record all three answers on mini whiteboards. It also replaces physical dice for whole-class games, so nobody chases dice under desks.
Differentiation
Modifications
Ask students to find only the sum at first and use counters or a number line to check. Pair students so one counts the dots aloud while the other records the numbers.
Extensions
Ask students to turn each roll into a two-digit number both ways and find the difference between them. Have students tally 30 rolls of the total and describe which totals come up most often.
