Word Building Spelling Game for Years 5 and 6: Letters Round

Word Building Spelling Game for Years 5 and 6: Letters Round

Word Builder Challenge is a word building spelling game for Years 5 and 6 by Teach This, an interactive whiteboard game aligned to the Australian Curriculum. Students build and spell new words using letter patterns, base words, prefixes and suffixes. There are 3 rounds, and each round gives 8 letters and 60 seconds to make as many words as possible. Every set of letters hides at least one word that uses all 8 letters. A timer bar runs, then the answer slide appears by itself with words such as triangle and reptiles. A game takes 10 to 12 minutes. It opens in Microsoft PowerPoint on any interactive whiteboard, panel or projector, with no macros, no student logins and no student data collected.

Run it as a literacy warm-up with paper or mini whiteboards, or as a pairs competition where the longest correct word wins a point. A stand-up routine in the notes checks the longest words in seconds.

Learning goals

  • We are learning to use known words, base words, prefixes and suffixes, word origins, letter patterns and spelling generalisations to spell new words.
  • We are learning to use known words, base words, prefixes and suffixes, word origins, letter patterns and spelling generalisations to spell new words including technical words.

Differentiation

Modifications

Let students work with a partner and give them letter tiles to move around on the desk. Set a target of three-letter and four-letter words first.

Extensions

Ask students to sort their words by prefix, suffix or base word, or to find an 8-letter word that is not on the answer slide.
