English Unit: Paraphrasing to Clarify Meaning
This unit plan supports explicit instruction in the comprehension strategy Paraphrasing to Clarify Meaning for Year 5 students. Across a structured sequence of lessons, students learn how to restate sentences, paragraphs and ideas in their own words to improve understanding of both fiction and non-fiction texts. The unit focuses on identifying key ideas, removing unnecessary detail and using clear, accurate language while maintaining the original meaning. It includes guidance for modelling, guided practice, independent application and assessment, making it suitable for whole-class instruction or targeted comprehension groups.
